PETITION CALLING FOR MORE RECYCLING TO BE RAISED AT FULL COUNCIL

10.54.51am GMT Wed 10th Dec 2008

The Liberal Democrats have handed in a petition calling for more recycling of glass.

The petition will be raised at the Council meeting on Thursday by Steve Darling, who is the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council.

Commenting on the petition Councillor Darling said, "The recycling figures in Torbay are shockingly low when compared to our nearest neighbours. In 2007, for example, South Hams recycled over 48% of its rubbish, Teignbridge recycled just over 50% of its rubbish, and Torbay only managed to recycle just over 26%.

"What local residents can recycle varies on where they live in Torbay. Many cannot recycle glass such as bottles and jars. This petition calls for Torbay Council to put more effort into recycling more glass. The more that is collected in the kerbside collections the better as it will mean fewer trips to the bottle bank for residents and an increase on what is recycled.

"There is a real demand for more recycling in Torbay - this petition is just the tip of the iceberg."
