PUBLIC URGED TO ATTEND PARKING METERS 'CALL-IN' MEETING

2.33.22pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 13th May 2008

Members of the public who are against the installation of parking meters have been urged to attend a meeting that takes place on Friday.

The Liberal Democrats 'called-in' the Conservative Mayor's recent decision to install parking meters throughout Torbay. This means that the Mayor's decision is put on ice until it has been subject to further review by the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Board.

The call-in meeting, which is open to the public, will take place on Friday, the 16th May at 2pm. The venue is the Meadfoot Room of Torquay Town Hall.

The Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council Cllr Steve Darling said:

"There is widespread opposition to the Conservative administration's proposal for parking meters in Torbay. The opponents of parking meters have been accused recently of being 'nimby's', but that is wrong. There are a number of valid reasons why the Mayor should rethink his decisions. For example, should Paignton really be hardest hit by parking meters when the town is still reeling from the news of the loss of the Waste Management Conference and when the Mayor's Vision proposes building on 4 of the town's car parks?

"The Liberal Democrats would urge anyone who can make the meeting to do so."
