CUTS TO TALKING BOOKS FOR THE BLIND DESPITE ASSURANCES

3.25.22pm GMT Fri 28th Mar 2008

Figures obtained from Torbay Council by Councillor Steve Darling show that £10,000 has been cut from the Talking Books budget despite assurances from the Conservative Elected mayor Nick Bye that the service would be protected.

Councillor Darling, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council said: "On the 16th January the local paper reported that "mayor Nick Bye admitted the proposed cuts appeared 'very mean minded' and pledged to make sure they would not be implemented." However, figures from the Council show that the Talking Books subsidy has been reduced by half. I have written to the Mayor seeking an explanation."

Councillor Darling's letter says:

Dear Nick,

Subject: Budget 2008/2009

Please find enclosed a copy of a listing of budget reductions for next year's budget.

I would welcome an explanation of the £10,000 cut to the talking books budget, as you were quoted in the media stating that there would be no reductions to this budget.
