CALL FOR PARKING METER DELAY UNTIL ROCK WALK DISRUPTION ENDS

1.09.43pm GMT Wed 19th Mar 2008

Councillor Steve Darling, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council, has written to the Conservative Mayor Nick Bye and demanded that he delay the introduction of parking meters in Torquay until the work to Rock Walk has ceased.

Councillor Darling's letter says:

I am writing to ask you to consider delaying the introduction of parking meters in Torquay Town Centre until the disruption caused by Rock Walk has ceased.

There is a precedent: in Brixham the introduction of parking meters has been delayed due to the disruption caused by the regeneration work. It seems to make sense for Torquay to be treated in the same way.

Failure to do this will confirm the perception that under your leadership Torquay is the poor relation to Brixham.

I look forward to your reply in writing.

Councillor Darling says: "As the mayor has already delayed the introduction of parking meters in Brixham due to the disruption caused by the regeneration work, it is only fair that the introduction of parking meters is delayed in Torquay until the work on Rock Walk ends. I look forward to the Mayor's response.
