LIB DEMS CALL FOR HIGHER RECYCLING TARGET4.17.37pm GMT Mon 3rd Mar 2008 The Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council will be tabling an amendment at tonight's Full Council Meeting calling for the authority to set itself a higher recycling rate. The Council's "Municipal Waste Management Strategy for Torbay 2008 - 2025" is being discussed at tonight's meeting. The Liberal Democrats will be calling for the Council to reach a recycling rate of 60% of its rubbish by 2025, rather than target of 50% in the report. The Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council Steve Darling said: "Our near neighbours, Liberal Democrat controlled Teignbridge District Council already recycle 50% of their rubbish, compared to Torbay's figure of 27%. Rather than just agreeing to reach Government set targets, Torbay should be aiming to exceed them. One of the Liberal Democrats' key themes is to put the environment at the heart of our decision making and our amendment reflects that."
