CAMPAIGN FOR PARKING BAYS LAUNCHED

11.23.33am GMT Wed 2nd Jan 2008

Liberal Democrat Councillors have launched a petition for parking bays to be introduced on roads that have been deemed a 'high priority' by the Council.

The Council has listed a number of roads in Torquay that need parking bays into three categories (high, medium and low priority). The Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for this work to be done for a number of years.

Three years ago the programme of works was agreed, but the Conservative Mayor cancelled the work after only two roads (Dorchester Grove and Willow Avenue in Watcombe and Barton ward) had had parking bays introduced.

Over the Christmas break the Liberal Democrats will be delivering street letters to the roads that were listed as high and medium priority which include a petition calling on the Conservative Mayor to reinstate the parking bay program in next year's council budget. The roads on the list are: St. Margaret's Avenue, Happaway Road, Falloway Close, Severn Road, Suncrest Close, Grenville Avenue and Princes Road East.

The Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council, Cllr Steve Darling said: "The lack of parking bays result in grass verges being ploughed over and becoming mud baths in winter. The grass verges become unsightly and can result in child and vehicle conflict. The introduction of parking bays will also save the Council money by reducing its grass cutting bill."
