TORBAY BENEFITS FROM 3RD BEST FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT IN THE COUNTRY

3.06.52pm GMT Thu 6th Dec 2007

Government figures show that Torbay Council has benefited from increased funding from central Government.

The figures show that for the next financial year (2008/09) Torbay will receive an increase in Government funding of 8.6%. This compares to a rise of just 2% for Brighton, Bournemouth and Poole - similar seaside local authorities in Southern England.

Councillor Steve Darling, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council said:

"For the Conservative administration under Mayor Nick Bye it can be said that on the face of it they have never had it so good as far as funding from central Government is concerned. The elected mayor should be known as 'lucky Nick'! As always, the devil will be in the detail, but next year's budget must be a breeze for them."
