COUNCILLOR HITS OUT AT LACK OF FREE PARKING FOR PAIGNTON THIS CHRISTMAS

3.05.16pm GMT Thu 29th Nov 2007

Ruth Pentney, the Liberal Democrat Councillor for Paignton Ward Clifton with Maidenway, has hit out at the lack of free car parking in Paignton over the Christmas period.

In previous years the car parking has been free on Saturdays in the run up to Christmas. This year the Conservative run council has decided that in Paignton car parking charges on Saturdays will remain in force during the morning, and then be £1 from moon until midnight. Car parking in Torquay and Brixham, on the other hand, will be free for two Saturdays in December.

Councillor Pentney said, "I was disappointed when I read the Council's press release about the car parking charges over Christmas. The residents of Paignton are being charged to park their cars, whilst residents in Torquay and Brixham will be treated differently and allowed to park for free.

"I do not know why the Conservative administration is treating Paignton differently from Torquay and Brixham. Usually parking is free on the Saturdays in the run up to Christmas, but now that seems to be gradually being stopped. Scrooge seems to be alive and well at the Town Hall."
