Second Councillor Switches to the Liberal Democrats

11.21.03am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 3rd Apr 2007

Councillor Beverley Brennan, a former Conservative who has worked as an Independent member of the Torbay Group for the past 2 years, has joined the Liberal Democrats.

Speaking about her decision Councillor Brennan said:

"Recent decisions surrounding care for the elderly, bus passes and the casino were all made by the current Conservative administration against the wishes of the majority. Having made the decision to rejoin the political arena, I have reached the conclusion that the only political party who truly respects democracy and the views of Torbay residents is the Liberal Democrat Party. I am delighted to be joining them. "

Councillor Gordon Jennings, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Torbay Council said:

"I am absolutely delighted that Councillor Brennan has decided to join the Liberal Democrats. She is widely respected across the political spectrum for her work as Scrutiny Lead for Finance. She will be a real asset to the Liberal Democrat Group.

"The Conservative administration under the elected Mayor are doing an awful job in running the Council. You only have to look at recent events to realise that. It is becoming clearer every day that only the Liberal Democrats can provide the necessary checks and balances to the Conservative elected Mayor."
