Nick Pannell- Fighting for Education11.33.16am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 5th Oct 2005
Hardworking local campaigner Nick Pannell will make sure that children have the best start to life as Mayor of Torbay. Local Lib Dem Nick Pannell said: "We need to make sure that every child in Torbay gets the education they deserve. As Mayor, it will be my top priority to make sure they do." As a parent of a six-year old daughter and a school governor for 17 years, Nick understands how important education is to local residents. He is also guaranteeing that every penny Torbay receives for education is spent on education. Nick is pledging to:- End the use of temporary classrooms. Address why 50% of places at some of our grammar schools go to children from outside the Bay. Provide more after-school clubs to help working parents. Nick added: "Youth services also need to be developed. Chill¡¦d Out in Torquay, for example, provides an excellent place for young people to gather under supervision. I would like to see these kind of services expanded. The same facility in Paignton called The Garage in Victoria Square has closed in the last three months. We need to get it re-opened as an alternative to hanging around the amusement arcades."
